About Comfy Engine
Comfy Engine is a reading room for people who make games with their sleeves rolled up. Some of our readers write their own engines for fun, some ship small games in Rust, Godot or a framework they found on a Sunday afternoon, and some just want to know what actually happens between pressing a key and a sprite moving on screen. We write for all of them.
What we cover
- Engines and architecture: game loops, entity component systems, collision, scenes, the choices behind small engines and why they are made.
- Rust gamedev: ownership patterns that survive a real game loop, crates worth knowing, assets, builds and getting a game onto someone else's machine.
- Graphics and shaders: wgpu from the first triangle, WGSL, lighting, cameras, post-processing and the maths of a good-looking 2D frame.
- 2D craft: pixel art, sprites, tiles, palettes, animation and the small touches that make a game feel finished.
- Jams and shipping: scoping a jam game, store pages, trailers, the web, and the checklists nobody enjoys but everybody needs.
The Book collects the pages we keep current: what an engine should give you, how the Rust engines compare and a page of small examples.
Why the name
A comfortable engine is one that gets out of the way: you open an editor, write a few lines and something moves. That is the feeling we chase in every guide here, whatever tools you use. The name stuck with us, and so did the habit of explaining things simply.
Who writes it
Five developers write the site, each from their own corner of game making. You can read about each of them on the writers page. We test the code we publish in small projects of our own, we say so when something depends on a version or a platform, and we correct mistakes in the post itself when readers point them out.
We do not take payment for coverage. Some pages carry clearly marked partner boxes for books, courses or tools; if you buy through one we may earn a commission, and that never decides what we write about or what we recommend.
